Donde está joy?

Categories: Inspirational

“Men are that they might have joy,” the scripture says. Do I have the right amount of joy? Or am I doing things that prevent me from enjoying it? I don’t necessarily mean sins, though they would of course have an effect. But rather, am I cluttering my life with unnecessary busyness or stress that eats away at my joy? With some parts of life have I missed the boat?

I don’t know what the answer is, at least not yet. But if I am doing things (or not doing them) which keep me away from the joy I want so desperately, then I’m more than happy to shed them off so I can get what I’m looking for. It seems like joy often lies in the simple things, not in elaborate theories or complex patterns of behavior.

For example: Smile. Be nice. Clean up after yourself. Work hard. Love. Be curious. Enjoy life.

Hmm, “enjoy” seems to be made up of “en” (or “in,” perhaps) and “joy.” In joy. Lest I cook up a new folk etymology, let me check the OED and see what it says. :)

“To be in joy,” says the definition, and the etymology concurs. Cool.

Anyway, life is too short to get stuck in the quagmire of self-defeating behaviors. No matter how ingrained something is in me, if I find that it’s getting in the way of my quest toward truth and happiness and joy and godliness, I’m going to give it up.

Alrighty, that darn long post should now be gone and the blog should appear normal in IE again. :)

…to be spiritually minded is life eternal. - 2 Nephi 9:28

That’s how you have joy all the dang time. (Also Mosiah 4:11)

So smile. :)
