Flickr just got cooler. A few days ago they announced a cool new feature: geotagging. You can now pinpoint exactly where your photos were taken:
So you can see that I have photos from Utah, Mexico, and Thailand. When you zoom in on Utah, it looks like this:
And down to Provo we go:
One of the really cool things is this, from the blog: “You can drag anywhere onto the map - a degree of “accuracy” is inferred by your current zoom level, so if you just want to show the city or general area a photo was taken, you can drag them on at a medium zoom level and those photos won’t show up in odd places for people zoomed right down to street level.” Very nice. And it’s really easy to geotag them — you just go to “Map” in your profile and start dragging and dropping.
It’s not going to be long before I give in and upgrade to a paid account… :) (Now I just need to get a camera…) You know, there are very few social networking sites that I really feel like sticking with and using on a regular basis. Flickr, LibraryThing, del.icio.us (though I rarely use the social features), and…well…that’s it. I do use Backpack for keeping track of my to-do lists, but it’s not social software. Anyway, Flickr’s doing it right, so I’ll be standing by them for the foreseeable future.
