Earpod

I gave in. Yesterday morning I went back to the bookstore and bought a 30gb black iPod. I’ll probably see if I can sell my old one.

The video’s pretty cool, I must say, and to my surprise the small screen isn’t as big of a hindrance as you’d expect. In fact, it’s almost like my mind’s eye has a built-in magnifying glass. I don’t know how to explain it beyond that. :) Anyway, I decided to give the whole movie-to-go thing a try, so I bought National Treasure for $10 and it’s almost done downloading. (I also downloaded most of the TED talks onto my iPod, which is pretty cool.)

I haven’t used the new search feature all that much yet — I’m still copying songs over from my hard drive (the USB connection is way slower than Firewire ~sigh~) — but it worked well.

The thing I’m most excited about, though, is the notes. They were there in the older versions, but I never really thought about using them till now. I downloaded Dracula from Project Gutenberg, chopped it up into smaller files through some site I found, and copied the files over. Not only is the text easy to read, but by nature of the screen’s width it’s the perfect column width. You can fly through a text quite quickly. I think Riverglen Press is going to start making iPod editions of Project Gutenberg texts… :) (PG texts could work as-is, but they really need to be broken up into smaller files, and each paragraph ought to be put on its own line so it wraps correctly.)

But now I’m off to class…
