Here at work we have a digital punch system for clocking in and out (as well as a card slider outside the lab, but I never use that). The problem is, I always forget one or the other. It’s a pain. A while ago I came up with an idea for a little gizmo that would use LEDs and hook into the serial port to contact the online system and tell me whether I was clocked in or out. A nice idea, to be sure, but probably too much work.
Yesterday I came up with a better idea:
It took all of five minutes to put this together in Illustrator, another five to get it printed over at Cougar Creations, and another five to cut out the circles and a cardboard middle and then tape it all together. (I couldn’t find any glue sticks here. We’ll see how the tape lasts.)
It’s low-tech but eminently more visible than an LED would be, and it’s extremely simple. Now my co-workers can easily tell if I’m clocked in or not. And so can I. :) Besides, there’s a fun kind of satisfaction in turning over the coaster. (We’ll call it a coaster, because I don’t know what else I’d call it.) And yes, I got the idea from Tucanos. :)
