Yet another multi-topic post.
1. Today’s Daily Universe has a series of articles about domestic abuse. I just finished reading them, and it made me so mad. How can guys do that to women? It’s so…evil. I wish I could somehow help every woman in an abusive relationship and set her free. Or incapacitate the abuser, permanently. Grrr.
2. The other day I heard about a company called LifeGem that takes the carbonized remains of humans (or animals) and turns them into diamonds. Yes, that’s right, you can wear your loved one on your hand or around your neck. Just don’t lose that ring! I take it I’m not the only one who finds this rather disturbing.
3. In my Latin class yesterday we were talking about Vergil’s description of the Teucrians as double-tongued (bilinguis), and one of the students mentioned that some gangs actually fork their tongues. (His brother’s friend did it.) Ouch. And I thought wearing a tongue ring was extreme. Sure, it’s a cool idea — for a character in a movie or a novel. But in real life? Sheesh.
4. Don’t worry, not all of today’s topics are bizarre or depressing. I took two midterms this morning. Oh, wait, not depressing. ;) Just kidding. They actually weren’t too bad, thankfully, and I’m glad they’re over. The reason I bring them up is that I’ve spent the morning memorizing. For me, it seems like memorization is kind of like drawing incrementally. Initially the outline is faint, just a trace. But then I darken in the lines, sketching the contours of the object, making it stand out from the page. When I memorize, it’s as if the material is initially very light, but with each repetition it gets more and more solid, almost tangible. It’s one of the coolest things in the world. :) I’ll write more about this sometime later — memorizing photographically, in groupings, etc. I love memorizing. Mmm. :)
