I can’t wait for my hair to go grey. And then to fall out. Yes, I’m looking forward to being bald. Really.
But that’s not what I want to talk about today. Lately I’ve been realizing just how large a factor hair plays in physical attraction, at least for me. It’s like night and day. I don’t know why it is, but it is, and this post is an attempt to get my head around it.
Let me give some examples of what I mean. Keep in mind that my hair vocabulary is extremely limited, but I’ll do the best I can, trying not to make a horrible muddle of all this. (Feel free to chime in if there are real terms to describe what I’m talking about, by the way. Precision is nice.)
The distinction, for me, seems to be primarily between tight hair and loose hair. By tight hair I mean ballerina hair, all pulled back into a bun. By loose hair I mean hair that’s free to dance with the wind. It doesn’t have to be all the hair — even just a few wisps and strands is enough to make a difference.
And the difference is huge — at least for me. Girls often change their hairstyles, and I’ve noticed that a girl who I ordinarily find attractive will somehow become much less attractive when her hair is pulled back tight. It’s a substantial, almost tangible change.
Actually, I’ve got it backwards. Hair pulled back tight doesn’t attract me, but loose hair carries with it an attraction that really is almost tangible. I have no idea why there’s such a difference — it’s just hair, after all — but it completely alters my attraction-perspective of a girl.
(Side note: I really like bangs. A lot. I suspect it has something to do with all this.)
And now to start digging myself out of this hole. :) By “attraction” I’ve meant physical attraction. Personality attraction has nothing to do with hair, of course, and it’s just as important as physical attraction.
I also realize that doing one’s hair does take a lot of time and effort, and I appreciate the time that girls do put into it. Really. Nor am I necessarily prescribing how girls should do their hair — all I’m doing is describing what I find attractive. Sure, I’d love it if I never saw tight hair again, but that’s not really the point.
My main reason in posting this is to see what y’all think. Is my preference for loose hair just that — a personal preference — or is there something more to it? (For example, I realize that my preference for straight/wavy hair over curly/crimped hair is just a preference and there’s nothing inherent in either that’s necessarily more attractive, per se. Ditto with my preference for brunettes.) Are there guys out there who find tight hair really attractive? I need some other perspectives here. :)
And for the girls in the audience, apologies for my severely limited hair vocabulary. That’s assuming there is a hair vocabulary, of course. Are there terms for the things I’ve been describing? Hair is something I don’t normally talk about. :)
