Domino effect

Stumbled across a quote by John Adams that really struck me hard:

“I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce and agriculture in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain.”

Wow.

It is funny that you mentioned that quote. Just tonight in my Elocution class that quote was used. (Not to mention the fact that I have long loved that quote myself.) We were discussing the importance of keeping arts in our home…

Have you read “The Fourth Turning: An American Prophesy,” by Stauss and Howe? They have interesting insights that are compatible with the John Adams quote.
