I never thought I’d blog about shoes, since I’m, you know, a guy. But here I am with this post. (Still a guy, don’t worry.)
Since I wear dress clothes to work, I also wear dress shoes. Every day, for most of the day. (As of August I’ve started switching into flip-flops when I get home so my feet can breathe, but that’s beside the point. Bear with me.) When you wear the same pair of shoes all day, every day, every week, every month, they wear out. Fast. My last pair was a good pair, or so I thought, but for the past two or three months the back heels have disintegrated and somehow grown teeth which then chew holes into my socks. Serious. Almost all my socks have holes in them now. (This is a regular thing; buying new socks has become a monthly activity for me. They do say it’s good to start traditions, right?)
But a couple weeks ago I walked up to Provo Temple in the rain. And I learned the hard way that my left shoe had a hole in its sole. Soggy socks = unhappy walks. (There aren’t that many other words that rhyme with socks. And yes, I really need to get more sleep.) So I determined to get new shoes.
Now, I’ve had my suit since before my mission, and for most of the three years since I got home, I was wearing those pairs of pants every day to work. They too are giving in to the effects of old age, with my pink, knobby knee starting to poke its eye out through the cloth. It’s gross. Not to mention that the suit is just a little too big for me, and in all honesty I feel frumpy every time I wear it.
So, in between Conference sessions, I went up to Mr. Mac and bought two new suits (they had a two-for-$250 sale), a new pair of wing-tipped Rockport shoes, and a new white shirt (the front pocket on my old one was gracefully peeling itself off and heading south) and two pairs of socks to boot. (Get it? Ha ha. Well, maybe it wasn’t that funny after all. Oh well. ~sigh~)
Anyway, they won’t be done adjusting the suits till the 18th, but I’ve been wearing the shoes for almost a week now, and I’m amazed at how different I feel. My old shoes were clunky without my realizing it. Now I feel sleek, professional, and almost omnipotent. :P I really feel like a new man. I can’t to see what effect the suits have — maybe I’ll get some sweet superpowers. ;)
