A different kind of Thanksgiving

Categories: Random

I try not to post anything too disturbing, but here’s something which came through the feed today and caught my eye. If you’re going to be eating anytime soon, come back and read the rest of this post later.

Still around? Here’s a clip from the CNN article:

The prestigious journal [New England Journal of Medicine] details the case of a previously healthy 18-year-old woman who consulted a team of gastrointestinal specialists.

She complained of a five-month history of pain and swelling in her abdomen, vomiting after eating and a 40-pound weight loss.

After a scan of the woman’s abdomen showed a large mass, doctors lowered a scope through her esophagus.

It revealed “a large bezoar occluding nearly the entire stomach,” wrote Drs. Ronald M. Levy and Srinadh Komanduri, gastroenterologists at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.

For the uninitiated, a bezoar is a hairball.

And not just any hairball, folks:

Hairball

Ten pounds, people. Ten pounds! Egads.

And now back to our normal fare. ~sigh of relief~

I could’ve gone my whole life without seeing that, and still died a happy man. Ugh. (!!)

How…

How did it get there? How did it accumulate?

Ben,

Totally random. I second sixline. What were you looking for when you found this?

Scott: :)

e: I agree. Gross, but cool.

sixline: The girl ate her hair for five years. (You can read it about it by clicking on the link.)

Donna: I subscribe to some feeds that pull in a variety of news sources; I wasn’t looking for anything in particular, it just came up.
