Discovering downtown

Categories: School, Getting Real

I love downtowns. There’s something about them — something alive, something spine-tingling, something mysterious — that’s got me hooked. So many interesting things. So many intertwined lives and histories. And so many stories. You know, I think that in a way it’s the stories that giddify me. And cities, particularly downtown areas, are pregnant with ‘em. Every alleyway has something to say.

Beyond that, though, there’s the feeling of exploration and discovery. Of course, it only lasts as long as there still remains an unknown, but even just a small bit of it is vastly satisfying. For example, I haven’t spent much time in downtown Provo, and so it’s mostly unknown and therefore mysterious and therefore even just the thought of Center Street gives me goosebumps. I’m a man of simple pleasures. :)

Anyway, I’ve got a master’s degree seminar in Vegas this weekend (I leave tomorrow and get back Monday night), and while Vegas isn’t exactly my favorite city in the world (why couldn’t this seminar be in London? ~wistful sigh~), the exploration factor has me excited. (No, no, not that kind of exploration. That’s why I detest the place. I’m talking about innocent venues.)

I think I’ll still have occasional Internet access, but my guess is that y’all will get lucky as this torrential deluge of blog posts from the top of the mountains slows down to a trickle for the weekend. Let the rejoicing begin. ;)

Howdy Ben! I’ve got 2 things to say to you…

1) I LOVE down town too. I work in down town Dallas, in a building that is nearly 100 years old but has been refurbished to become a university campus. It’s positively beautiful. One of the best things about this nine story building is that only four floors are complete. The non-complete floors are amazing to go an wander around. For the most part they’ve been completely gutted, but there are still occasional treasures to be found if one goes exploring. My building is also situated right across from the old courthouse–a true piece of architecture-eye-candy.

2) Good luck with your seminar this weekend. I don’t have one this time around, though my only two classes are online. What will you be taking this semester? Hope it’s great!

Enjoy Las Vegas (a lovely city, if you give it half a chance). Watch the Bellagio fountains a time or ten for me!

Sally: Ah, man, I’d love to explore a gutted building like that. Someday I need to move to Boston or New York or London or D.C. or some place with a large downtown… As for the seminar last week, it went quite well — already I can tell that this semester is going to be way better than last semester. I’m taking SLIS 5200 (organization — metadata, really) and 5300 (management).

Janssen: I didn’t watch the Bellagio fountains this time, but I did see them a couple years ago and wow, they’re cool. :) Just out of curiosity, since you’re from Vegas, how do you reconcile the “lovely city” bit with all of the bad stuff? Maybe I’m talking about the Strip and you’re talking about not-the-Strip, though — I don’t know. :)
