Chord surgery and book lovin’

Categories: Books, Music, Library, Cool Stuff

A few cool things I’ve come across lately:

1. Melodyne’s Direct Note Access, a short video demonstrating their new technology that lets you edit the individual notes of a chord — from a recording. It’s like Photoshop for music. I have to admit that I’m still not completely sold on the idea, but as someone who likes to create, I do think it is pretty darn cool.

2. LibraryThing recently launched their LibraryThing Local: “LibraryThing Local is a gateway to thousands of local bookstores, libraries and book festivals—and to all the author readings, signings, discussions and other events they host. It is our attempt to accomplish what hasn’t happened yet—the effective linking of the online and offline book worlds.” This is very, very cool. It takes my location and shows me all the book places nearby, all the way out to Draper and Sandy. This is heaven. :) Granted, it’s user-generated and so it’ll take some time to become completely thorough, but already it’s growing quickly, and it’ll only get better. I heart LibraryThing. :)

3. And LibraryThing has also just opened the LibraryThing Zen Garden. Also very cool. Granted, most of the themes up so far aren’t exactly improvements, but there will eventually be themes that do look really good (I’m planning on designing one myself :)), and who knows, the cream of the crop might even become the default theme.

I like the concept of LibraryThing, but I have a hard time getting into it. The design is pretty off-putting. What I really want is Delicious Library to have some sort of internet display option, maybe through .mac?
Of course, while I love love love Delicious Library, I have a really old Mac without a built-in camera (and don’t want to fork over the cash for a handheld scanner), I don’t use it myself, so maybe that’s already an option, or will be in 2.0.

Yes, the design isn’t the greatest, but hopefully this’ll help it get better. :) Other than that, though, LibraryThing is pretty nice. I’m a fan. :) (And typing in ISBN numbers isn’t all that bad, really.)
