Chat ala Facebook

Categories: Web, Technology, Cool Stuff

Whoa, Facebook’s had chat since April 6 and I somehow didn’t find out until tonight? :) Actually, I don’t think they rolled it out to me until sometime today — it only started appearing on my Facebook window yesterday, I think, and I hadn’t really gotten on Facebook till tonight.

Anyway, it’s a nice chat experience, one that feels good and is downright fun. The full-window mode is cool, too. (I don’t know how much I’ll use it myself, though — I kind of like having it at the bottom of the window.) The one thing I don’t like is that chat transcripts are only temporary. The archivist in me dies at that — I want a Gmail-like experience where it saves everything. But hopefully that’ll come soon.

Consensus: I like Facebook chat. We’ll see if it overtakes Gmail in popularity… (I do have more friends on Facebook than I do on Gmail, so that’s more people to talk to, which is nice. :))

It was in limited beta for a while. Actually, the limit was pretty interesting. It was only working on for accounts from some Ivy League colleges, leading Valleywag to say that the beta was SAT-related. I laughed.

I dunno, Ben…do we REALLY need another reason to be on facebook?! I can barely keep a handle on my Gmail chats as it is…:)

M: Haha, that is interesting — but considering that’s how Facebook got started to begin with, not too surprising. :)

KJ: Hmm, I don’t know how to answer that. :P
