Scott: Special Collections. Cover letters give you a better feel for a person's personality than a mere resume. You are what you say, that sort of thing. It's not 100% or anything, of course, but it does put you in the ballpark. I agree that multidisciplinary people -- Renaissance men and women -- are often good choices. But I am one, so I'm biased. :P

Ann: Haha, that's more true than you know, actually. I think it's even becoming a deal-breaker.

Laura: Good point. :)

Being on the other side of the table has also really improved my interviewing skills.

While I agree that a GPA should not be overrated, it is hard to achieve a high GPA unless you're capable of following directions, have a decent work ethic, desire to succeed and reasonable ability to prioritize and meet deadlines. All of those are things I want in an employee.

Ben, I think I know why the cover letter matters so much to you. Let's just say you like a well-turned phrase. Found the application to dating yet? :P

Where are you working that you're hiring people?

I'm not so sure about cover letters... what's the attraction?
I'm with you on GPA and stuff like that.
And it is hard to turn people away.

I think hiring someone who's generally a smart person, who has a great "common sense" and is not one-sided (good at one thing only) but can understand how their work effects the other aspects of the project or business is very helpful.

And finally yes... the lord can make someone the best for the job if even he/she isn't the most qualified!

Meaning someone who didn't get converted by the present attraction of specialization that schools presently propaganda.
