Truth and lies

Categories: Writing

Being a writer who loves telling stories, every once in a while I can’t help but wryly think that my job is basically to tell lies. I could go around fibbing my heart out and call it career development, honestly. ;) I mean, what do I say when they ask the honesty question in the temple recommend interview? “Mostly, but I spend most of my free time lying. Is that okay?”

But wait: Jesus was a storyteller.

Okay, I guess we’re good. :)

bwhahaha!

“Mostly, but I spend most of my free time lying. Is that okay?”

This line made me laugh out loud this morning. Good way to wake up, thanks.

You know, Ben, this is something I’ve been thinking a lot about recently - what is truth, really? Our perspective on what is “truth” and what is “false” is so limited - we only know so much. I think that the modern definition of both is flawed, really - because it teaches people to think in absolutes, but that’s pretty dangerous. And it’s not what God wants us to do, I don’t think. As a general rule, I think he wants us to be able to see that spread between white and black because that area is where we find empathy and or sympathy for those that live differently than (we) do.

That’s why I think finding “truth” in the way God sees it is a process - it’s one of the Savior’s many names, right? “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free”? The Savior makes us free - he is the way the truth and the light, etc. etc. So I wouldn’t fuss so much about telling “lies”. I don’t think it’s a lie at all - telling stories. It’s not telling a lie, it’s searching for truth.

Ryan: Thanks, glad you liked it. :)

Joni: Good points. And I don’t really believe telling stories is against the law of honesty — if I did, I’d stop. Maybe. :P

I know you don’t - I was just sharing my thoughts. I think I’m going to blog about it. . . hmmm…
